Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is situated in the north-western corner of the Lake Garda. On the west side the peak Monte Rocchetta(1575 m) rises above the town, while on east side there is the Mount Baldo (2218 m). This position makes Riva one of the more spectacular places of the lake. Renowned tourist locality, Riva is paradise of sail navigation and windsurf and seat for important sport meeting.
The main square of Riva - III Novembre Square - with its palaces of Lombardic-Venetian taste, is opened on the lake. It is delimited from the lake and the hill formed by an ancient landslide, where the old city scrambles up. In front of the public square there is the harbour. On the side near the lake, PALAZZO PRETORIO rises , built in 1375; under the wide porch Roman, medieval and modern tombstone can be seen, and among these, there is one that remembers the several dominations to which the city in the centuries has been subordinate.
The CASA DEL COMUNE is connected to Palazzo Pretorio by a fifteenth-century porch, restored between 1475 and 1482, and adorned by several coats of arms among which the one of Riva.
On the east side of the Square III Novembre, the TORRE APPONALE rises. According to documents it was erected towards the 1200, low, embattled, it was raised in 1555; now it is 34 m high and buried for 3-4 meters. Used as a prison, then as observatory during the First World War. At the top of the tower, there is the 'Anzolim de a Tor', a little angel that we can find also on the churches of Arco and in all the Trentino region.
The CHIESA DELL'INVIOLATA, one of the most singular sacred buildings of all the Trentino, was built in 1603, according to the plan of an unknown portuguese architect. The outside is simple; the inside, with octagonal plant, is magnificent, because of the wealth of altars, decorations and paintings of the best artists of the age. The church can be considered the most beautiful example of baroque architecture of the Trentino.
